How Coffee Made Me Cry

Yesterday morning, things at work were a little crazy. Not bad....but just hectic and constant. So, when I tried to get a cup of coffee during a down moment but the coffee was cold, I decided I didn't need coffee enough to bother with the hassle of making a new pot. It just wasn't that important.

About an hour later, the president of my company, B, called. She had stepped out of the office for coffee with T, one of the principals of the company. And, instead of calling and asking to be transferred to someone else in the office, she had called for me. And, she had a simple question: "Natalie, I'm at Starbucks and was wondering what I could get for you to drink?"

And, I just stuttered and stammered. "Uh....well...um....well, I guess that would be great. Um...I'd like...um...gosh, I can't remember what it's called....um...oh...a cinnamon dolce latte. That would be great....thanks."

It was a SIMPLE CUP OF COFFEE. What the heck's my problem?

So, when they got back to the office, B was smiling and T was outright laughing. And B said, "Natalie, it wasn't a trick question."

I knew that and stammered something else ridiculous about how I'd had issues with the coffee maker or something...and eventually spit out a pathetic "thank you."

A few minutes later, I wrote a thank you email to B saying something along these lines: "I know it was a simple cup of coffee...but thank you so much. Your kind request just threw me because typically I'm thinking of other people and rarely have others serve me. It was really nice...but really threw me. Thank you so much!"

And, would you believe it, I actually started to cry a little while I was writing that email.

I'm a dork. It was a cup of coffee. Sheesh.
