My dad had back surgery earlier today. He's had minor back problems for as long as I can remember (I actually remember praying for his back when I was about four years old) but it's never stopped him from doing anything.
A few weeks ago, he called in the most desperate pain I've ever witnessed him in and asked me to pray.
Then, after an MRI, the doctor told him that they'd have to operate right after my sister's wedding so that there wouldn't be permanent nerve damage - a disc in his back had chipped and was resting on his nerve.
So, surgery was today and everything went smoothly. My dad's doing okay. The doctor actually found two large pieces and three small pieces of that disc on his nerve....and the doctor's not sure how in the world my dad's been walking or functioning...I guess he should have been basically paralized in his left leg...but wasn't. So, now it's recovery and phyisical therapy time.
The doctor told him yesterday (during his pre-operation consultation) that after he's recovered, he not only can't go back to work but also can't do his gardening and other stuff around the house - and, honestly, if that happens, it'll be like a slow painful death to him...to be stuck at home, not able to do anything.
So, please pray with me and my family for a) a quick recovery and no infection as the wound heals, b) that his boss really will allow him to be a non-physical working foreman once he's recovered (he's in construction in NYC) and c) he'll actually be able to do more than the doctors are forecasting....100% recovery of his mobility would be awesome.
I'm actually totally doing fine with this and have lots of faith for what God'll do...but, it's also a weird reality to be at that point in life when my dad (my own personal superman, regardless of the bumps we've hit in the road over the years) is getting older and our roles are beginning to reverse. It's weird.
