I've been trying to figure out ways to begin living out some of my longterm goals now - before I'm married, though so many of them seem like they need to be fulfilled in the context of a family.
And, while I'm not ready to be a foster parent as a single woman...nor am I in a place financially to allow people to stay in my house free of charge as they get their lives together....I do want to start doing something in that realm.
So, yesterday, I checked out the Big Brothers Big Sisters website (BBBS) to see what sorts of opportunities were available for me to serve there. I'd love to be a big sister to some little girl who's got maybe a similarly difficult childhood to the one I had. But, I've also wrestled with the fact that I'm still presently really involved at church and trying to figure out what things to specifically say yes or no to. I am adament about not getting too involved and too busy again. My little downward spiral this summer is still too fresh in my mind to let that happen.
I digress.
I looked at the BBBS site and found that there are some GREAT opportunities for me to get my feet wet with mentoring a little girl. The main one is a weekly school tutoring program. It'd be for one hour a week either early in the morning (7:45-8:45) or in the late afternoon (3:30-4:30).
I put in an email request to BBBS for more information and to get the ball rolling and am still waiting to hear back from them. But, I talked with my boss today to see what sort of flexibility there'd be for me to either leave early one day a week or come in late so that I could do this tutoring and she was ALL FOR IT!
Nothing's even happening yet but I'm really excited. I feel like I'm moving in the right direction.
Finally.
